The report that Mr Stanhope would take the Chancellorship of the Exchequer and Earl Carnarvon the Secretaryship for', the Colonies is now known to have beon' premature. ", To-day it is' stated that the Chancellorship and leadership of . the ' House of Commons have been ottered to Mr, Goschen, who, with the support of the Conservatives, will contest the seat for the Exchange Division of Liverpool, rendered vacant by the death of Mr.David Duncan. monsjhas not been offered to Mr Goschen as previously reported. He has, however, been offered the position of Chancellor of
the Exchequer, which office both the Marquis of Hartington arid Mr Chamberlain have urged him to accept.; . ; ■
Mr Chamberlain is endeavoring to. bring about a re-union between the followers of Mr Gladstone arid the Unionist Liberals.
. A letter from Mr Gladstone is published in this morning's ■ papers, in which he: states that he appreciates .the motives
that caused Lord Randolph Churchill to resign, and urges the Liberals to adhere
to their present policy while there is a seeming opportunity of a re-union of the
(liffefent sections of the party;
A lire occurred in Wood-street in the city, last night, by which a block of warehouses was destroyed, an enormo'is amount of damagebeing done. - .
