A. little girl aged .about nine years, named Louie Conn, was' drowned in the harbor yesterday afternoon while bathing. Wellington, Thursday ._ Mr H.W. Mowatt, for some years chief engineer on the Wairarapa, and now at the Belfast freezing works, near Christeliurch, has been appointed Inspector of Machinery. A meeting of creditors this morning in the estate of W. P. Waters was fully attended. The debtor had not prepared any statement as to what caused his present position, but during the severe examination to which lie was subjected it was elicited that he had made heavy losses in trade. The creditors decided that he did not deserve consideration, and refused to grant him any assistance from the estate, but awarded Mrs Waters £50 and her wearing apparel. nvercargill, Thursday. :At the ■ inquest to-day on the body of the lad Morton, who was reported to have hnng himself out of a morbid desire to emulate a neighbor who lately committed suicide, it was made clear to the jury that death was the result of accident. Tho lad's neck was dislocated, the feet and body resting partly on the floor. It is assumed that the boy had been on a beam, overturned and slipped, falling in such a position that the rope dislocated his neck before his feet could reach the floor.
