RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Monday, December 20.. ■ (Before Mr G. A. Preet(e, R.M.) . . . ' DRUNKENNESS. ■ John Miller, John Davis, Thomas Hogan, James Tyne, Jobn Morrison, John M'Leod, and Alexander Smith were severally charged- with drunkenness. A fine of 5s and costs was imposed in each .case, with 48 hours' hard labor as an alternative. Alice do Vascos was charged with drunkenness and with creating a disturbance in a public place. Defendant denied the accuracy of Both charges, and stated that the arresting constable kicked her in tho leg and caused her to suffer much pain. The evidonce did not bear out the defendant's version of the affair, and she was fined £1 and costs, with throo days' hard labor as an alternative.
. JoKn Daltpn, charged with drunkenness while in charge of a horse, was defended by Mr Sheath, who succeeded in scouring the dismissal of tho case. VAGRANCY. Malcolm M'Nichol, charged with being by night on premises the property of tlie Corporation, without lawful excuse, was dismissed with a caution, his Worship advising. defendant to load a steady and respectable life. - BREACH OF BYE-LAWS. ■ Charles King, for leaving a horse and cart unattended at the Spit, was fined 5s and costs. He was allowed till Saturday to pay the fine. ASSAULT. Mary Verschafelt charged her husband, Israel Verschafelt, with assaulting her on the 16th of December. Complainant produced a large handful of hair which she said had been torn from her head by her husband, and deposed that sho was in fear for her life. Defendant denied much of what was asserted. His Worship ordered defendant to find one surety in £25 to keep the peace for six months, and to pay 7e costs. ; THE LICENSING ACT. William Ruddick, licensee of the West Clive Hotel, was charged with selling liquor to Patrick O'Connor on Snnday, tho Oth of December. Mr Lascelles appeared for defendant. The evidence wascontradictory, and his Worship dismissed the case. • Elizabeth Lyons, proprietress of an unlicensed accommodation house at Maraekakaho, was charged with selling fermented liquors on the 11th of December. Mr Lascelles appeared for defendant. It appeared from the evidence taken that the liquor sold was horehound beer, and the case was dismissed. '
