[PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. 1 Auckland, Wednesday. Last night a fire broke out in Mr Thomas Barnett's residence, Remuera, and the stable and coach-house, valued at £150; were destroyed. The fire was checked before it spread to the dwelling. Tv Tawhiao, the coming king of the. Maoris, is lying dangerously ill at Whatiwhatihoe without medical attendance, while Tawhiao is absent at the Bay of Plenty. , The Native Minister received a number of domitations to.-day, principally with regard to the village settlement scheme. A deputation from tho Parnell Borough Council arranged with Mr Ballnnce and the Crown Lands Commissioner to hand over the Council's endowment lands at Hokiancja for village settlement purposes. The Laborers' Union last night struck from their roll the name of a member who took a prominent part at the unemployed meetings, and who had been collecting money ostensibly for the Union which he never accounted for. It is suggested to prosecut3 him for obtaining money on false pretences. The&'a/ i 'scorrespondent telegraphs from Alexandra that he has obtained specimens of gold and quartz got by the prospectors and natives in the King Counrry. At a meeting to-day of the Auckland Mercantile and Pastoral Company the following resolution was carried : — " That' the directors be empowered to carry on the business of the company with, the view of winding it up, if found necessary, at the end of the financial year, and that the directors be empowered to make two calls of 2s 6d per share." ■ A six-roomed house at Avondale, belonging to" IMr Moriarty, warder in the asylum, was burned down last night. It was insured in the South British for £300 and the furniture for £50. At a Government land sale at Rotorna to-day not one allotment was sold. , Wellington, Wednesday. ' The Government have received a cable message, stating that tho Admiralty havo presented to the colony the eight 61---poundor guns which Admiral Tryon lent during the war scare. ■ The guns along with the carriages are said to he valued at £300 each. On Monday next tho Colonial Treasurer will recsive a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce re the cable rates betweon Australia and New Zealand.! An application was made to-day for a new trial of the libel action Voxel v. Evening Press, but the hearing of the application was adjourned until Wednesday next. Mr B. Read, M.L.C., who has been laid up some weiks, is in a very weak condition. His Excellency has received the following telegram from the Prince of Wales on the subject of the Colonial Exhibition :— "Referring to the suggestion already communicated as to the permanency of the present Exhibition, I now propose that this memoriairof the Queen's jubilee . should take the form of /a permanent Imperial Institution of the Colonies and India, comprising a display of colonial' and Indian resources, contributions in aid of the institution to be solicited from the Governments and the public here and in . all parts of tho Empire, and to be vested iv a board of trustees appointed by the Sovereign under the perminent presidency, of the heir apparent to the throne. Shall bo "lad to be favored with your views by cable, and to bear whether your Government are prepared to recommend an annual grant for a certain number of years or, if preferred, a sum down.— PRINCE ok Wales." The following is a copy of the memo, to Ministers by his Excellencythe Governor, transmitting tho Prince 1 of Wales' 'cablegram:— "Apart from the pleasure that I am sure the colony, would feel in identifying, itself with the celebration of tho Queen's jubilee, it would no doubt be of great nrtvau-' tage to New 'Zealand to take part in creating the institution referred to by his Royal Highness. The message of his Royal Highness is referred to Ministers with the utmost confidence that they will give their earnest consideration to this proposal." The following is a copy of the telegram sent in reply by the Governor to the Prince of Wales:— "My Government heartily thank your Royal Highness for so ' gratifying a proposal as that of permanently associating the colonies with the celebration of the Queen's jubilee" 1 by the formation of an institution to endiiringly record their pro. gross. My Government will join the Governments of theiieigliboring colonies in taking the steps necessary to give effect to the proposal." A copy of the Governor's reply is being sent to all the other colonies. The charges of embezzlement against Hodgson, of the Union Bank, and those against tho Cook family for larceny, were proceeded with to-day and further adjourned.. , Thames, Wednesday. Miss Amy Charlotte Allom, the eldest daughter of Mr A. J. Allom, clerk of the R.M. and Warden Courts, was to-day married to Mr R. T. Walker, of the Hawke's Bay Herald. The marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev. W. Calder, of All Saints' Church, Ponsouby. The bridal party left for Auckland at noon to-day. Dunedin, Wednesday. The Duke of Edinburgh Hotel at Beau--mont, which was insured in the National for £150, has been destroyed by fire. During the construction of a tail-race at Black s, two nuggets, weighing 2oz ancl 3oz respectively, were found. .Mr Dick has retired from tho contest for the Dunedin Central seat in the House of Representatives, and Mr Bracken is announced as a candidate. A little girl named Agnes Fletcher, between three and four years old, was killed to-day by being run over in the street by a cart. An action was commenced to-day in the Supremo Court arising oitt of tho case of Burke v. Elliott, which has been before tho Court for about three years. Elliott bronghtan action against Kettle (solicitor) and Burke to recover money alleged to have been paid under a threat of criminal proceedings. The case was not concluded to-day.' .
