HOSPITALLS AND CHARITABLE INSTITU- •■• TIONS BILL. % ■ ' Sir Kobert Stout moved that tlie amendments made by the Legislative Council in the Hospitals and Charitable Institutions Bill be agreed to, with the exception of the amendment to separate Piako from the Thames and add it on to Waikato. Mr Wiiyto moved that that amendment , also be agreed to, and after some discus- . sion the motion was carried by 39 to 28. NEW ZEALAND AGRICULTURAL COMPANY. Sir George Grey desired to bring up a , personal matter with reference to a speech made. a few nights ago by Mr.Ballance, in . which he referred to liim (Sir George Grey) as being a promoter of the Now Zealand - Agricultural Company, and had said that . there were promoters ' arid promoters -of . ■ -.that company. He wished. to ask if Mr Ballanco used the words attributed to him, , as they had been sent to the newspapers? Mr Ballance admitted he had used those - words, but in doing so he gave his reasons for using theni, and those reasons Sir v George Grey had not given. He wished V-: to say that ho had nothing to do with send- ' ing his remarks to the newspapers.' ■Sir George Grey said he gave the state- ' ■ ,ment an absolute • denial. Ho would bo sorry to be a promoter of that, company. Mr Ballance said he had spoken from memory of what had taken" place inlß7B. : He hau since spoken of the matter to one or two ot his colleagues at that time, and. ■ they said that Sir George Grey'had given his sanction to the company. . . Sir George Grey asKed whether Mr Ballance stated that he (Sir George) was .. a promoter of that company ? ' Mi- Ballance said that- his recollection was that lie stated Hint Sir George Grey ' had given his sanction to it. ■ Sir George Grey moved the adjournment of the House, and gave a detailed history of the case. . " Sir Robert Stout said that his recollection was that Sir George Grey had cordially approved of the company Ho believed if the price of land had i^'t up the Agricultural Company would have ' been very beneficial to the 1 colony. Sir George Grey denied that ho had ever approved of the company. The matter then dropped, . ; questions. : . Keplying to questions, it was stated— 1.
