DANVIRKE.
[FROJI OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] August Gtll. A meeting of the committee of the Tautane-Danevirke Special Settlement Association was held here yesterday evening. A letter from the Minister of Lands was read, to the effect that the law would not allow more than 100 acres to be taken by any one member of any Special Settlement Association, but as the members had applied for the land under a misapprehension, the payments they had made on account of it would be rctnrned to them if they still declined to accept the ,100 acres each. The committee were of opinion that they had better take the money, but would call a general meeting of the members of the association before finally deciding to that effect. Mr R. Smith was entertained at dinner last night at the Danevirke Hotel, by a few ofnis more intimate friends. Many people did not hear of it until it was over, and expressed regret that it had not been made public, as that course would have resulted in a very large and enthusiastic gathering, Mr Smith being so universally popular. " YonrOwn " was unavoidably absent,' bnt had he been there he would have expressed his sympathy by stating that it would have given him very much more pleasure had he to welcome Mr and. Mrs Smith than it did to say good-bye to them.- Mr Smith, *-\ho has been for some yeartf manager of the Mangatoro station, is about, to take the management of the Masonic Hotel, where we bush folks heartily wish him success.
