New Zealand Bcenes, painted in water colors by Mr Barraud, of Wellington. A meeting of representatives of the Wellington branches of the various inaurance offices, whether colonial or foreign, was held to-day to consider the bill now before Parliament relating to insurance companies. Mr E. Pearoe '/.. occupied the chair. The following resolution waa passed :— " That in the opinion of this meeting it is not de- . sirable that the Fire and Marine Insurance Companies Bill now before Parliament should become law, except . so far as relates to the limitation of liabilities of shareholders in local companies, for the reasons given ait a meeting - of the Chamber of Commerce held on July 20fcb, 1880, whioh are as follows : (1.) It has not been shown that such a measure ia required, there being no instance on record of a fire and marine insurance company doing business in . the colony having failed to meet its engagements. (2.) Neither the general .publio nor the mercantile community . have expressed any desire for legislation in this direction. (3.; The guarantees provided by the bill are too small to afford any real protection to _insurers, and are calculated to mislead those whom , it is proposed to protect. (4.) There is reason to believe that many of the large English and foreign insurance . companies which have done . business in the colony for many years, .; .^ and have deservedly enjoyed the confiT dence of the publio, are by their acts of : incorporation precluded from complying , with the provisions of the bill, and < must, if it is.passed, withdraw from the ", : colony., (6.) The Chamber considers that such a measure should not have

, been .introduced without reasonable .;/ notioe, so that those institutions chiefly aftleotod by it mighthave had an opportunity to consider its "provisions. (6.) It appears undesirable to impose restrictive which must have the I, effeot," by limiting the number of competitors, of raising the rates of insurancethroughout the colony." A deputation was appointed to wait upon the. Treasurer acquainting him with the resolution arrived at by those present. \A meeting of importers of drapery, clothing, &0., and of manufacturers, was held in the Chamber of Commeroe . to-day to conßider the new tariff. The various items affecting the trade were fully considered, and a general feeling was expressed to the effect that the new ■ tariff was of so complicated a character as to cause endless" annoyance and trouble to importers. The different items subject to different rates of duty would be ho difficult to disaeofc in the' invoices that it was felt each importer would require at least an extra clerk to undertake the work, and the Customs would also have to employ a large extra staff of experts. Instead of being able to . dear goods immediately on the arrival of a steamer and get them to the warehouse, it was pointed out that large shipments would require such careful examination as to cause considerable . arid vexatious delay, as well as extra --charges for wharfage and storage. It was also pointed out that the new tariff imposed 15 per cent, ad valorem on many , classes of trimmings and linings used _. in tailoring manufactories, and therefore duty free, while checked cotu. tori shirtings, which were now largely &made up in the colony, and used, by the \ working classes, would also have to pay this duty. One large manufacturer present stated that in consequence of these .duties he would have to discharge 30 workwomen who were now earning fair wages. The general conclusion arrived at by the meeting was that there ought to be a list of goods free of duty, but with alterations from the present one, and more clearly defining the* several

..articles., The meeting expressed it- .. .self : .ready to suggest several lines .of .goods now admitted free which they thought might fairly be charged .-■with duty,. such aa white sheetings, ■grey and twilled sheetings and prints, but that all duties should be at a uniform .rate v If more revenue had to be raised they, 'would be willing to submit .A;:tp Btich duties, but they wanted the la.atieß, whatever -they were, made dear "s'i^an'cl simple. A committee was formed up a list of articles which they should be admitted free, and of ■ fhose which should be dutiable,, and it, was decided that the Colonial Treasurer be asked to fix a time when he , wowld, receive a deputation from- the meeting. The following telegram has been received by the Premier with reference to the" new tariff :— " Dunedin, June 22. / The directors of this company regret that the Government has seen fit to pro- ; ' pose increased, duties on woollen goods) x ; as the wool industries in this' colony, in -. their opinion, do not require it. — J.
