THE CUSTOMS TARIFF.

Below we give a comparative statement, showing the differences between the present and proposed tariffs. It will be understood that this comparison cannot be taken as absolutely accurate in every item, as the enumeration of i articles in the two liata is often widely different, and should the proposed tariff be adopted the Commissioner will have to define many tbings which are left doubtful. The letters N. 0.8. mean i " not otherwise enumerated ": —

FREE GOODS. The following is a list of goods exempted from duty : — Acid, boraoic, oarbolio, fluaric, muriatic, oxalic, and salicylio; aoida for medicinal, chemical, or manufacturing purposes, not otherwise enumerated ; albo carbon, ambergris, anatomical preparations ; aniliae dyes, crystal, animal carbon ; animals, living ; annato and annato seed, argol or crude tartar, asbestos, aaphalte, asphixiator for rabbitkilling, axe and hatchet-handles ; bamboos, unmanufactured ; bank notes, barilla, basis, beohe-de-mer ; belting, cotton, flax, and india-rubber; bismuth ; bisulphide of carbon, blacksmiths' bellows ; blocks, iron ; blue, ultramarine ; boats ; boiler, composition (rooket) ; boneß, crude, ground, or burnt ; bookß, printed, magazines, and newspapers ; bookbinders' thick vellum ; bootmakers' materials, viz., cashmere felt, flushing, lasting, webbing, and royal cord for .dippers;
