It sometimes happens that some depraved individual, after lone practice, acquires the power which the blarneystone is supposed to confer on pilgrims, and can " lie like truth, and yet most truly lie." One of those caused a great deal of anguish to the wife of a gentleman here last week. It apf 2ars that an unusual number of empty waggons was brought up by one of the trains soon after the constable had taken the names of those liable to serve as members of tho militia, and the jokers spread the report that the recruits were to be sent away in those waggons. Ormondville, with only a female population, with no one to cut firewood, with no Road Board, no one to abuse either the Board or its chairman, presented a dismal picture enough, but the husband of her bosom to be exposed to draughts in barracks, damp in tents, the blandishments of the Napier ladies, or the no less dangerous bullet of the Russian invader, completely broke tho good lady down, and for a time she was like Eachel mourning, and would not be comforted. She has found out the hoax, and has regained her cheerfulness, but if she ever sees the Ormondville gentlemen vainly trying to stand steady on one leg while tho drill instructor is putting some awkward recruit in proper position, she will conclude that there is a laughable side even to war.
One consequence of the result of the inquiry into the licensing election is that tho most available members of the Road Board have had to submit to a great deal of abuse, and the chairman in particular, whose business renders him unable to keep out of the way, has been bullied nearly out of his boots. On Monday evening, while a meeting of the Board was being held, a gentleman who had evidently " dined " made his way into the room and proceeded to give him a piece of his mind in such a high key that the Foresters, who were holding a meeting of tho court in the same building, had to send out a message to him asking him to make less noise, as they had paid for the use of the rooms, and could not be disturbed.

family so well the past season, when all the rest of us have been sick so much, and have have had the doctors running to us bo often," " Brother Taylor, the answer is very easy. I used Hop Bitters in time, and kept my family well, and saved large doctor's bills. Four shillings' worth of it kept us all well and able to work all the time, and I will warrant it has cost you and most of the neighbors £10 to £100 apiece to J"ep sick the same time. I fancy you'll tako my medicine hereafter." See. 9A We believe that if everyone would U3e American Co.'s Hop Bitters freely there would be much less sickness and misery in the world, and people are fast finding tliiout, whole families keeping well at a trifling C3st by its use. We, advise all to try it. Eead. ' 95

It is reported that the late Mr Collins, M.T?. for Knaresborough, left nearly a million pounds sterling. This is an exaggeration, but he died very rich indeed. In hi 9 habits he was as methodical as he was penurious. When in London he lived in one room on the third floor, in Charlesstreet, and took his very frugal meals at the Carlton Club. For years he never spent more than 4s Gd a day;_ iv fact, this was the sura he provided himself with every morning. His breakfast, consisting of tea and one muffin, never varied; his dinner was a cut from the joint ; between the meals he neither ate nor drank. His wardrobe comprised two suits of morning clothes, which he wore on alternate days, and an evening suit. He never had a greatcoat or rug, although he always travelled third class by train, and he used to boast that he had not been in a hired vehicle for 20 years. In the country he would go out with a basket and purchase for cash, from his own tenants, the provisions he wanted. As he was unmarried, and leaves an only sister, it will be interesting to learn, when his will is proved, if. he had any object in practising such rigid parsimony. Penuriousness was, however, his only fault, for he was in every respect a most amiable and agreeable man. — Truth.
