WANSTEAD HIGHWAY DISTRICT.
The first meeting of ratepayers of the Wanstead Highway District waß held at the Waustead Hotel last Saturday. On the motion of Mr L. Newman, Mr W. 0. Smith was elected chairman.
After reading the Gazette notice calling the meeting, the Chairman asked the ratepayers present to nominate "Wardens for the ensuing year.
Messrs D. S. Fleming, H. Hartree, W. L. Newman, W. 0. Smith, and T. Daulton were elected Wardens, aud Messrs E. Hartsborn and T. Olarke were .appointed auditors.
A map of the Eparaima district, showing the boundaries of the late division, was laid before the meeting, also a statement compiled from the map and the valuation roll, showing that the new Wallingford district had 86,990 acres, with a valuation of £9200, and 19 ratepayers ; and the Wanstead district only 30,605 acres with a valuation of £3004 and T7 ratepayers.
The meeting unanimously decided that under those circumstances the late division of the Epai'aima district was most unfair, especially as nearly the whole of the traflie from the Wallingford district passed over the main road through the Wanstead district to get to the Waipukurau railway station. The meeting terminated with the usual vote of thanks to the chairman.
, At a meeting of the newly-olected Road Board held directly afterwards, Mr W. L. Newman was elected chairman for the ensuing year.
The only other business done was the appointment of a valuer, and deciding that tenders be called for getting and breaking 300 yards of metal at the quarry on the Gorge hill.
