The Union Company's s.s. Hawea, Captain A. Kennedy, arrived here from Southern ports yesterday at 2 p.m. She left Port Chalmers Railway Pier on Friday last at 2.30 p.m., arrived at Ly ttelton on Saturday at 9.30 a.m.; sailed at 8.30 p.m., arrived at "Wellington on Sunday at 2.30 p.m. ; loft again on Monday at 2.45 p.m., and arrived here as above. Experienced light N. winds with heavy swell from Port Chalmers to Lyttelton, then strong E. winds with heavy beam sea and thick dirty weather to Wellington ; afterwards had fresh S.E. ] breeze with moderate sea till reaching Cape Palliser, when the breeze increased to a fierce gale with a tremendous sea, which continually broke on board and twice carried away the starboard gangway aft. To make this worse a mist as thick as a hedge came on, and ao Captain Kennedy decided to heave-to. After 24 hours the mist lifted and showed Black Head about a mile and a half distant j from thence had fresh S.E. winds with heavy swell. The Hawea brought the Tararua's passengers and cargo c Tried past here last Saturday, her cargo in all amounting to 75 tons. The steam-launch Bella tendered with mails and passengers, and got out and in over the bar without even wetting those on ' board. The b.b. Sir Donald and the ketch Three • Brothers were tak ng in the cargo, after which she was to leave for Northern ports, probably about, midnight. We have to thank the purser, Mr W. Kennedy, for report and papers. When the, 8.8. Sir Donald was towing the ketch % Three Brothers out to lighter the Hawea's cargo yesterday afternoon the ketch went right on the , bar-apit, bnt was got off with the assistance of the . steamer, which when backing also grounded for a minute or so. The s.s. Southern Cross is still bar-bound. She. will most probably leave this afternoon as the sea on the bar has gone down, and now with freshes in (he rivers a good channel ought to make quickly. The s.s. Go-a-head still lies at the breastwork awaiting a favorable opportunity for leiving for Wellington, via the coast.
