Loch Lomond took the lead from the start, with Lone Hand in close companionship, ? phanging. ; places occasionally with The 'Agent. All cleared the hurdles without fault,- ; On coming into the straight Lone Hand came into competition, and was only a length behind. On coming to the last hurdle Loch Lomond struck, and his' rider came on his neck, giving Lone Hand a chance to come up. Both flogged to the post, where they finished with a dead heat. The rider of Lone Hand 'intimated that he would protest against^ Loch Lomond on the ground of jostling on coming' to the scales, but it was not prosecuted, and Lone Hand retiring, Loch Lomond was left to walk over for the first place. Rata succumbed soon after, giving place to Laertes, but Ariel, ridden with great judgment and consummate' skill/ ran into second place, challenged Laertes, collared him in the straight, , and ' Laertes being then thoroughly Beaten Ariel wonbj four lengths, amidst .loud plaudits.
