DAVEY'S PETITION AGAINST MR SUTTON.
REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE. •< (tit TELfiGHAPn); j(FRdM OTJR 6"\VN CORRESpONDENT). ' .' . Wellington; Tuesday. The, report of tlie Native Petitions' Committee on Mr Sutton's case, which is a very long one, will not be presenteduntil to-morrow. The meeting of the committee this morning was remarkably stormy, amendment upon amendment being moved. Finally the original motion, which practically exonerates Mr Sutton from the serious charges contained inj the petition, \vds carried. By the casting vote of the Chairman (Mr Hamlin), who informs me that his reason for voting as he did was that whatever might be tlie individual opinion of members of the committee, there was insufficient evidence to produce in a court of law, and therefore it would have been uselsss to bring in a report which would haive been tantamount to recommending legal proceedings. As the committee w.ere debarred frdni having the original deed beforV therii, they could not judge whether the names of Paora and Rora, Noioi attached to it were or Avere not fdi'gei'ies.
