NAPIER STAR CRICKET CLUB V. HAWKE'S BAY COUNTY CRICKET CLUB.

The first match of the season between the above clubs was plaj ed at Hastings on Saturday last. Owing to the dilatory manner in which the greater part of the Hawke's Bay County team turned np the captain of the Star team (Mr Gilberd) offered to allow the County men to go to the wickets and commence batting, as there were only six of their men on the ground, and so enable the game to begin. It was then getting on for half -past 12 o'clock, an hour and a half after ihe appointed time for commencing. Messrs Tanner and Furniss went to the wickets with the bat, on behalf of the County, to the bowling of Messrs Edward 3 and Martin. Tanner, after making one, was taken off Edwards' bowling by a sharp catch by Day at long-stop. Williams then joined Furniss. Furniss hit at one from Martin, which he missed, and it took his wicket after adding one to the score, making two wickets down for two runs. Cotterill then joined Williams, and they both commenced knocking the bowline;

about, especially Ootterill, who contributed 10, and then succumbed to a " yorker " from Martin. Williams contributed nine, being caught by Mayo off Martin's bowling. Murray next joined Ootterill, and by very good cricket made seven, getting the best hit of the day (seven) off Martin's bowling; ; Gillman.then joined Murray, but he soon retired for nothing. Warrilow took hia bat, and by rather indifferent cricket put together five ; Murray, was then bowledby a " bailer " from Edwards ; Fitzßoy joined Warrilow, but had a short life for four; Warrilow next sent one back to the bowler, which he held. The remaining players soon retired without adding anything to the score ; thus ending their first innings with a total of 38. There was but one bye, owing to the good long-stopping of Day. The Star then commenced their first innings with Mclntosh and Day to the bowling of Murray and Furniss. Day received the first over from Murray, but hitting a ball to leg was oiught by a substitute ; Edwards then joined Mclntosh, but was shortly after bowled by a bcall from Fnrniss, which, owing to the nature of the ground, broke about afoot or eighteen inches from the

leg, for five ; Mayo then joined MclntoSh, but shortly retired for nothing from a similar ball. Gilberd then went to the wickets and tho score began to run up, when Mclntoah hit at a leg ball from FurnisSi which broke in and took his wiekei, after playing a careful innings for only three rtins ) Hovell then joined Gilberd, arid the two together soon ran up the score to over 50. Hovell, after playing a very nice innings for 11, succumbed to a ball from Tanner ; Carnell took his placo, but after seeing a few overs was bowled by a full pitched ball from Tanner. O'Conner then joined Gilberd, who shortly after was caught by a substitute, after playing a good innings with allround hitting fof tile top score of 19. Oelrich was next to handle the Willow with O'Connor. After scoring. 11 by Very good hitting the latter was caught by a substitute. Cornford, the last man,

joined Oelrich, and the first ball he pulled away to the leg for three. Oelrich played a careful innings for one, but owing to the bad running of Cornfoi'd lie lost three runs ; however, Cornford suffered for it, aa the next over he was run out by Oelrich. The total of 71 was registered for the Star's first innings, being 33 more than the County. The second innings of the County concluded for the same as the first innings, viz., 38, thus leaving the Star six to get to win ; but owing to the most of the County men discourteously leaving the ground before time was called, their captain decided to give up the match. The Star therefore claimed an eleven wicket victory, although they won the match by 33 runs on the first innings. Subjoined are the scores : — nAVKE's BAY "COUNTY CO. Ist Innings. 2nd Innings.
