SELF-MADE M.P.'S.
Of English notables in the moneyed line, Mr Ripley, the member of Parliament for Bradford, who owns half the town, is self-made. His father and mother used to attend the market and carry home in a cart articles for dyeing. The father of Mr Bas3, the great brewer, was in a veiy small way of business, and hiß mother sold yeast in a little shop. The first Lord of the Admiralty's father kept a news agent's store in London. Mr Walter, member of Parliament, and chief proprietor of The Times, dates back to his father's humble printing-office in the city. Mr Johnston, who left behind him the Standard, worth £30,000 a year, besides real estate, was an officer iv the old Bankruptcy Court. The late Herbert Ingram, member of Parliament and founder of the Illustrated News, kept a little drug-shop at Nottingham. Mr Lawson, the chef proprietor of the Telegraph, from m which
he draws for his haif share quite £^0,000 year, was the commercial representative of an inkhoiise. He is' now one of the richest commoners in England. Report has it that his income is over £80,000 a j'ear. This, of course, does not approach the iiv comes of the wealthy men of England who have inherited as well as made for^ tunes. ' Robert Crawshajr had at least £7,000,000 left him by hia farther. How much more he has made or lost is hardly known, he gave his daughters weddinggiftS that would buy a German dukedom. But talking of newspaper men, Labouchere, in spite of newspapers and theatres, pays income tax on £35,000 a year. He was robbed, some time since by forgeries on hia bank, of £15,000, extending over some months, without being aWare of it. The bank called his attention to some ir- . regularity, which brought the fraud to ' light. __________
