THE STARTLING PERSONATION CASE AT SANDHURST.

A STBANGE ROMANCE. | It will be remembered that we were recently informed by telegraph that a woman who had passed for a man, and had been "married" to other women, had been discovered in Victoria. A paper . received by the mail gives the following further particulars : — Profound sensation has been created by successive disclosures connected with the woman Evans, alias Tremaye, 20 years personating a man, and three times married to other women. The history so far as discovered is as follows : — Mrs Holt, nurse at the Bendigo Hospital, identifies Evans as a girl, Elleu Tremaye, a fellow passenger to Victoria in the immigrant ship Ocean Monarch in 1856. She shared her bunk with another immigrant girl, who became ill and died, or landed at Rio Janeiro en route. Her tecond bedfellow was a qui6t girl — Mary Montague, who became attached to Tremaye, who had peculiar ways, wore male linen, and was vaguely suspected on board of being a man". A short time after arriving in Melbourne Tremayo returned from the country in male attiro and mariiod Montague. • The latter died between 1857-59. Fourteen . years ago Evans, alias Treymaye, was married again to a girl named Sarah Moore. Another fellow passenger states that the first wife was Marian Delahunty, also a bunk sharer, who had a child and died. Sarah Moore bore two children, both since dead. Moore died in 1867, and was burried at Eaglehawk. The third marriage took place in September, 1868, to Julia t Marquand (aged 25), now living, who 18 months ago bore a child. She attributes it to the imposition of a strange man coming to her room one night about the time she expected her husband home. After the birth Evans showed symptoms of mental aberration. Ultimately she was conveyed to Kew Asylum, and managed to escape the bath. She was transferred to another asylum, where the bath was insisted on. This resulted in the discovery of her sex. Medical examination shows she has herself had children. Latest advices state Tremaye has been married to a sailor and had two children , and that Delahunty left her and is Btill alive.
