MELBOURNE RACES.
The following additional items relative to the Melbourne Races are by the Arawata at the Bluff: — The Spring Meeting of the V.R.C. commenced' with the Melbourne Stakes. Only four horses started, and First King won easily, Richmond, 2; Le Loup, 3. The performance of- Le Loup was considered to extinguish his chance for the Cup.
The Hotham Handicap , w t as won by Trurn. Yass ; Rivertori, 2 ; 'Waxy, 3. Twenty-three youngsters started for the Maribyrnong Plato. Palmyra won with case; Gcraldine and Otira ran a dead heat for the second place. The time, I rain. 4 sees., was only beaten once, whon Habena ran the race in 1576. Fourteen horses started for the Derby, ■ which was won by Suwarrow, who made his own running nearly all the way; Belladrum, 2; Rivalry, 3. The time, 2 mm. 43 sees., was only equalled onee — viz., by Chester in 1577. Swiveller won the Essendon Stakes in a canter ; Le Loup, 2 ; Strathearn, 3. The Footscray Stakes were won by Tocal, after a fine finish with Sir Joseph ; Monarque, 3. On the Cup day racing commenced with the Maiden Plate, which was Avon by Caspian after a very close finish with Lohengrin. The Railway Stakes furnished a fine contest between Mercury and Columbus, the former just gaining the victory. Respite won the Kensington Stakes by a head from Dover. Tocal won the Darling Stakes easily ; Canard, 2 ; Brilliante, 3. The Van Yean Stakes were won easily by Trum Yass ; Bob Sawyer, 2 ; and. Violet 3. The winner of the Cup, Darriwell, is a five-year-old brown horse, by Tim "WhilnVr (imp.), from Norms*, bred by Mr Inglis of Ballan, and sold to aTasmanian gentleman who races under the name of Rawlinson. Darriwell is the last horse whose appearance would suggest a Cup winner. His name was scarcely mentioned in the betting, and his stable only backed him slightly. Le Loup looked very handsome when stripped, but did not show up in the race. Suwarx'ow, the winner, is a beautiful small dark grey horse, by Snowden. Some time ago a Melbourne volunteer dreamt that Suwarrow would win the Derby, and Darriwcll the Cup, and mentioned his- dream publicly several days before the races.
