T HE WEST CLIVE BOILING-DOWN
Mr M. Mitchell,, of West Ciive, has erected on his property in! that district a boiling-down and wool-scouring establishiiieiit, and the works are now so far advanced aa 1 to enable him to commence Operations at once. The building is, of iron, 98 feet by 58 feet, Avith a large loft lot storing and drying wool and other purposes. It is erected on high ground, free from floods, and being on the banks of a side creek, the offal is washed away daily into the sea. On the grouild floor there is a large boiling- down vat, and also a refilling ottfe, attached to which is a field boiler, and an eiglit-horse horizontal engine, which will drive the whole of the machinery in the establishment, as well as the machinery for a coopery which Mr Mitchell purposes erecting near the works. With the" steam washing "machine now finished the wo.ol will have two good soaks; after which it will pass into a rinser, Where it vfill be washed by two 3-inch artesian wells connected together, giving a splendid flow. Both the" washing and rinsing machines have three sets of rollers for the wool to pass through. A wool 7 press,/ on an improved principle, constructed by Mr Garry, of Napier, is ready for work, and will be brought into operation as soon ds required. The wool will be pressed bystea'mV Oil the upper floor there is a large tailk with exhaust steam, 25 feet wide and 2 feet in depth, with a jet attached, to supply the wool washing machines. Over the boiling down vat a large knife is placed for cutting up the sheep. The sides of the upper story are all grated for drying purposes, and altogether no expense has been spared to render the works as perfect aa any in the colony. Being under one roof, the establishment will be saved from many of the difficulties and disadvantages which other proprietors have to contend with. Already Mr Mitchell has had wool washed by the steam and cold water process, and he -is now thoroughly satisfied from the results that his venture will prove & successful one. The works have been erected ..under the proprietor's own supervision, aided^by. Mr Vernon, the wellknown engineer of Napier, whose skill and- workmanship .have . given every satisfaction to his employer. 'We trust the expectationsof the proprietor will be fully realised, and that the energy and enterprise he has exhibited will be rewarded. He is well known throughout Hawke's Bay as a thorough practical man, having a large and varied experience^ in the business. •' . '
