Auckland, Saturday.' Respecting the Minister of Marine case, the Government reply to the petitioners that the law does not justify demanding an explanation from the Grand Jury as to their action. The Government have, however, sent for the depositions taken at the Magistrate's Court. ; The rowing season was opened by a procession of boats. It was headed by the Naval Brigade pinnace, followed by ten of the Auckland Rowing Club's boats, and then came six belonging to the Ponsonby Rowing Club and three from the North Shore Club. A large number of private boats also' took part in the procession, taking up positions in the rear of the clubs' boats.

: Hsighton's blacksmith shop was burnt down this evening. The front part was used as a carpenter's shop. The men knocked off work at 2 o'clock, and the fire broke out at 5 o'clock. The place was completely gutted. It is stated to be insured in the Colonial, but the amount is not known.

Hauraki Manning -was brought up on remand at Dargaville on the charge of giving valueless cheques with intent to defraud. The prosecution failed to established a felonious intent, and the case was dismissed. During the hearing over a hundred natives were in and around Dargaville, some of whom it is stated came armed and made no secret of their intention to rescue the prisoner if he had been committed for trial. After the dismissal of the case, they paid the European who had laid the charge the £30 of which he alleged he had been defrauded,, treating the matter as one of account.

A three-mile trotting match between Morlin's and Porter's mares took place yesterday on the Riccarton-road. It was .won easily by the former.
