BUSH FENCING.

Sir.— A person singing himself " Rata" has written a most extraordinary letter in your columns in reference to bush fencing, and refers to me in particular as the person who asked Mr Ormond the question whether he would got a clause inserted in the Fencing Act compelling owners of bush land to fall one chin wide to protect fences. That I asked the question I don't deny, but the question was entrusted to me by a member of some commitee formed for the purpose of asking Mr Orraond questions affecting us as settlers ; but Mr "Rata" says he cannot understand what object I had in view in asking the question. I believe him, aa it is very evident that anyone who is capable of inventing such nonsense understands but very little of anything. He says that settlers shouid do as he has done or would do, viz. , leave one chain of bush standing till after the burn and then fall it for a fence. Well, I can safely say there is no one here except Mr " Rata 1 ' who would act such an idiotic part as to cover up about eight acres in forty for a useless fence. Again, he says that in all cases the surveyors have not lines along which anyone could run a fence. Now, I have been settled in Woodville from the first before a Town Board was seen in it, and have been up some scores of miles of survey lines since that time, and therefore know just a little about the feasibility of running fences up survey lines. I have found that in nine cases out of ten you can go but a very few chains up any line without meeting with an obstruction, in the shape of. a tree 6 or.
