ROAD TO THE NORTH.
Sur, — Through tho medium of your papei 1 , allow me to call the attention of the public to the necessity of opening \ip a more available road between Napier and Pohui, leading north, than that in present use, following up the Esk river, which fiver is croased some forty times, and consequently renders the road impassable during and some timo after floods. There are large tracts of valuable land in the Petane district which are not even near any road, yet are assessed in rates equal to those convenient to a good public road, and having an easy outlet for produce. With a good road the timber in the Pohui Bush could be rendered available throughout the district, instead of being .almost entirely useless as at present. A line of road was surveyed last season, leaving the Tanpo road at Marshal's, and tending north-west through Messrs Carr and Spence's propeities, and joining the old survey line of Mr Ellison, leading from the new Taradale-road to Taupo. There is no doubt that the opening up of both these lines of road would be useful to the public, and increase the value of adjoining lands in proportion to the greater facility for transit of produce. Now that the bridge at the Spit is likely to become a reality, the necessity of having a better feeder to the bridge than the stoney river road of the Esk will become more apparent as the public money becomes invested in that extensive undertaking. Why should not Messrs Sutton and Russell be induced to apply for a grant for this object during the next session of the Legislative Assembly. — I am, &c, Taylor White.
