[BY SPECIAL WIRE. J The Gazette notifies that the Hon. William Swanson has been sworn in a member of the Executive Council. He has held the position for many years. A departmental commission is sitting enquiring into the charges made by Mr Travers against Mr Allan, Registrar of the Supreme Court at Wellington, to whose system of taxation of bills of costs Mr Travers objected. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received cable advice of the arrival in London of the barque Fernglen, from Wellington, after a passage of 92 days. Mr A. M. The s.s. Manawatu took last night from Wellington 50 more A.O.s to Wanganui.
The new Charitable Institutions Bill prepared by the Government provides for the payment of a subsidy out of the consolidated revenue, for five years, not exceeding half the cost of maintaining any charitable institution.

It also carried away overboard a large quantity of fruit and Other cargo. The gale continued ohwithout ' intermission. Last Saturday: the decks Were deluged with water. At midday last Sunday the vessel shipped a tremendous sea which "almost desired the deck forward, carried away the breakwater, and smashed the port life-boat on' the bridge. The sea continued heavy' until the arrival bf the Wakatipu at Wei- ■'- lington. During the gale W^., A. Gfant/ the officers' servant, was missed, and it is supposed he was washed overboard. He was never seen after 8 a.m. on Sunday. Mr M'Kenzie, the chief engineer, nar- ' rowly escaped drowning by a sea carrying him over the rail,, but he ..fortunately caught hold of the.Aboat davits.
