Of the 280 varieties which exist he has chosen about twenty of the first that came : in his wayi^JThepe plants are to be given over to the Govern- ■ ment at Larnaca by March, planted, '.atyd" in a healthy, living, green cbncUtion,'^ The cunning Italian has takan any variety *" that offered, as only " Eucalyptus "; was ' mentioned in the contract. However/" there is probably only one variety— that cultivated in Algiers — which will thrive in Cyprus, and this is not toibe met with among those supplied by MrMV, and all*;, the Eucalyptus trees planted round Larnaca -will be dead in a few,, month's!/ ' Those that are suitable for the soil of ^ Cyprus have now been offered to the ■ Government for 2f . a-pieoe, whereasjjijr N M.. obtains 5 f. a-piece for u^eles6[ I
The Italian pockets the money, the English Government loses 90,000 f., and has been cheated into the bargain.
