GOVERNMENT WORK.

Sir,— Can you inform the undersigned whether it is not necessary to call for tenders publicly when any Government work is to be done ? I always thought it was, until I saw the new bridge at Clive being painted by day laborers, employed by the engineer, and find that the old Court-house, or Government Buildings in Napier, are being painted by a new chum, no doubt a friend of the official whose duty it is to authorise the doing of such work, and without the formality of advertising for- tenders, &c. By answering you will oblige. — I am, &c, H. B. Thompson. [We are not aware that there is any law or regulation requiring that a painting job of the land referred to by Mr Thompson should be let by tender*— Ed. Tr -q ETI .
