[By Special Wike.] AUCKLAND, March G. It was raining here all last night and during the greater part of to-day. Floods arc roportcd from several of the country districts. There is another mining spurt at the Thames. Moanatairis have risen to 60s.

Tho Maori meeting was continued today. Among the resolutions passed there was one declaring that they would not return any more members to the Plouso of Representatives, but avouM accept the Maori Parliament instead.

Tho Royal Commission appointed to enquire into the matter of the Bay of Islands roll commenced its sittings at Russell to-day. Mr Williams, the late returning officer, was examined as to the ' objections made by him against the witnesses who are to be examined. The proceedings will occupy about five weeks. A meeting of persons interested in the timber, grain, and shipping trades was held to-day. There Avas a numerous attendance. The object of the meeting Avas to obtain tho re-imposition of the duties on timber and grain Avhich Avere removed last session, as it is asserted that the removal has been injurious to the interest of Auckland, and has prejudicially affected the shipping trade of the port. A committee was appointed to consider tho best steps to be taken to carry out tho desires of tho meeting. It is intended to interview Sir George Grey on tho subject, in order to ascertain his sentiments. It is also intended to take steps for placing- on the rolls all persons avlio are interested in the matter. CHRISTCHURCH, March G.Mr Montgomery addressed a numerously attended meeting of his constituents to-night, tho Mayor in the chair. Mr Montgomery spoke for upwards of an hour, and Avas frequently applauded. At the close of the speech a resolution Avas passed by acclamation, thanking him for his address, and expressing tho confidence of the constituency in their representative . Only 17<i members have hoen enrolled in the Royal Agricultural Society, Avheroas 400 are required before operations can bo commenced. The ram fair to-day Avas not so successful as last year. Bird, manager of tho Dunedin Club, was fined £20 for having a salmon trout in his possession. INVERCARGILL, March G. At a meeting of tho Town Conn oil tonight it Avas resolved to udveruso for a gas engineer. The Ministerial appointment of Messrs Pratt and Dalrymple as trustees of the Municipal Sinking Fund, in direct opposition to the Toavii Council, Avho recommended Messrs Dalgleish and Hatch, has caused much dissatisfaction, and more Avill likely be heard of it. OAMARTI, March G. j John M'Laughau was charged at the R.M. Court to-day Avith attempting to defraud his creditors. It appeared that at the time he filed his schedule the accused Avithheld the sum of £21, not thinking, as Avas first stated in his defence, that money Avas property. Ho spent a portion of tho money, but when subsequently asked for it he handed OA r er tho balance, some £0. Mr O'Meaghc, for the defence, contended that the Avithholding of tho money Avas solely owing to ignorance, and that nothing fraudulent was intended. Tho Bench took time to consider its decision. A firm here are about to lay four ships on the berth for tho United Kingdom, to be loaded at the breakwater wharves.

Great discontent is expressed at the delay of work at the port, owing to the scarcity of trucks.
