OAMARU HARBOR WORKS.
Sir, — Your contemporary in its issue of this evening, in a short article upon the results of the Oamaru harbor workß, . enumerates the reductions made- in the landing charges since last year. Oir comparing the present wharfage rates at Oamaru with the increased rates proposed to be charged here by the Napier Barfeor Board, it will be noticed that those at Oamaru are even now from 75 to 150 per cent higher than those contemplated here. I draw particular attention to the wharfage on timber, as this has formed here lately the subject of a public meeting. At Oamaru timber payß now 9d per 100 feet — that is, fa 6d per 1000 feet, while the rate here is fixed at 3s per 1000 feet. Concerning the result of the works, as far as the trade of the port of Oamaru is concerned, the Telegraph is silent j probably it has escaped its notice that the foreign shipping has fallen off during the last two years in spite of the breakwater, and that the banking account of the Harbor Board is heavily overdrawn. As I have not the latest returns at hand, I am unable to quote figures, but I will revert shortly to the subject. — I am, &c, Kauri. Napier, August 26.
