The Chancellor of the Exchequer, in reply to a question, said the British ironclads would leave the Sea of Marmora when the Russian troops evacuated San Stefano. SYDNEY, August 14. The Sydney Morning Herald's correspondent says that the Secretary of the Colonies desires to avoid reappointing Sir Hercules Robinson Governor of New South Wale 3, but has extended his term to gain-- time to appoint his successor.

At the conference between brewers and publicans to-day, the former agreed to forego the additional halfpenny charged on beer, the price to be Is 6d per gallon as before, with tha tax added. It was also resolved that a delegate representing the publicans and brewers be sent to Wellington to oppose the tax. The Chamber of Commerce have received the following reply to the congratulatory telegram to Lord Beaconsfield : — " Honored by receipt of message from Auckland. Cordially thank Chamber of Commerce. — Beaconsfield." The Hinemoa sounded the Katikati harbor entrance and found only 11 feet of water, The Lady Jocelyn will therefore be towed to Tauranga and the immigrants landed there. The centrifugal pump becoming choked prevented the attempt to float the Ann Gambles to-day being successful. CHRISTCHURCH, August 14. The Government land sales on Monday and Tuesday realised over £5000. The Rangitata railway bridge caught fire yesterday, but not much damage was done. It is supposed the fire was caused by a spark from the engine. The benefit to Mr Hoskins in honor of his forty-first professional anniversary took place at the Theatre Royal last night. It was a grand success, and there was a large and brilliant audience. Mr Hoskins received a perfect ovation, and during the interlude was presented by Sir Cracroft Wilson with a cheque for £200 raised by public subscription, and by the members of the theatrical company with a gold chronograph watch, costing sixty guineas. DUNEDIN, August 14. In a small parcel of minerals lately forwarded to Professor Ulrich from the Mount Stewart district, he found three true Oriental rubies and a sapphire. These gems were small, but it is expected that larger ones exist in the same locality. The Customs revenue collected at this port on Monday was the largest for four years, and amounted to £4553. The receipts of the Dunedin Jockey Club for the season 1877-78 amounted to £5291 9s 4d, and the expenditure to £0577 8s 2d. The balance of assets over liabilities is £2033 10s 2d. Further additions to the grand stand have been made, including eight loose boxes and a cottage for the park-keeper, at a cost of about £720. Mr A. H. Jack, manager of the National Insurance Company, was entertained at luncheon yesterday by the directors. He proceeds to San Francisco j with the view of opening a branch there should sufficient inducement offer. A series of entertainments will be given in the Queen's Theatre next week in aid of the Benevolent Institution. PATEA, August 14. Up to yesterday the Waimate Plains survey was proceeding satisfactorily, and there was not the slightest apprehension of interference by the natives, though a few Europeans, riled at their prognostications of evil not having proved true, are said to have given false reports by asserting that fighting was intended. These reports were spread by a few dissatisfied natives on the plains, but with no avail, and the work is proceeding. WELLINGTON, August 14. At the Couuty Conference, yesterday, the question of maintenance of hospitals by the Counties, with the Government subsidy of pound for pound, was fully discussed, and only negatived on a division on the casting vote of the chairman although his other vote was with the ayes. It was resolved that auctioneers' and other license fees should belong to the County in which they are collected, but, if the

license is used in more than one County or Borough, the license fees shall be divided amongst such bodies ; that when a Eoad Board shall fail to elect trustees and a | governing bddy, then such road district sliall merge into the County ; that whenever an owner of land cannot be found, all rates overdue shall be charged againat the land. A committee was appointed to draw up the final report. The County Conference to-day concluded its business, It was resolved that the Counties Act be amended, so as to give rights to Counties to levy a County rate. over outlying districts : that a written acceptance of nomination by' a candidate for election, if properly attested, shall be sufficient, that the present system of the survey of roads through Crown lands is unsatisfactory, and the Conference suggests that, before a sectional survey is undertaken, an engineer be appointed to lay off and grade the road lines ; that a vote of thanks be tendered to the Government for the use of the room and free printing, also a vote of thanks to the chairman, especially for his casting vote re maintenance of hospitals. The report of the proceedings will be printed. The total cost of the conference is £1 per County. In Banco to-day, the case of Buckeridge v. Wardell was taken. It was a rule nisi for a new trial on the ground of misdirection and verdiot against evidence. , The Court reserved judgment. The point raised by Mr Barton was that by the statute of Henry VIII. a conveyance was void if the vendor was out of possession for a year and a day, and that this is good law in New Zealand. Mr Izard contended that the New Zealand Conveyancing Ordinance overrid the English statute.
