Hawke's Bay Herald. FRIDAY, JUNE 15, 1877.
We have commented on the war news elsewhere. The views of the Berlin Press in regard to French polities are to be taken cum grano. The intelligence, however, is a fresh indication of the alarm that exists in Germany in regard to the French preparations, which is evidently very genuine, and perhaps well founded. The rapid recovery of France is one of the most astounding phenomena in history. A recent writer in Blackzoood, ; in reference to the French army, re- | marks : — " The system of tactics is entirely new, aud admirably fitted to the temperament of the French soldier. The new fortresses and intrenched camps are nearly finished, while some | of them are already armed, stored, victualled, and even garrisoned. As regards numbers, France has now an active army of 1.300,000 men, and a territorial ai'my of 500,000 men. Against this huge array of nearly two 1 millions she had in 1870 only 250,000 men immediately available, and not quite 300,000 more for reserves and garrisons." The chances are that France is now quite a match for Germany single handed, and is anxious to try conclusions with her again. All this is very disastrous for the wool markets. It would be well for us, in Hawke's Bay, if we were in the position of our neighbors in Cantorbury, who depend now moi'e 021 grain (which has gone up with a bound since I the outbreak of the war) than on wool. Their grain export last year was worth. 1 we believe, £ 1.1 00.000, or £300,000 more than their wool export. The collection of the Turkish forced loan will, not improbably, shock Europe with fresh atrocities, and precipitate some of those risings that are spoken of as probable in Candia, Epirus, Thp.ssnly and elsewhere. The times are yea Unbecoming so exciting that we shall shortly lie able to feel that there is some excuse for the prophets who .see in current events the opening of the Apocalyptic seals and of the pouringout of the Alois.
