Hawke's Bay Herald TUESDAY, MAY 8, 1877.
The position of England with reference to the Suez Canal is a singular one. For the sake of her commerce she must prevent any attempt at its destruction by the Khedive in the interests of his Suzerain. At the same time, she does not see her way to preventing the passage of Russian men-of-war through it into the Mediterranean. Now, one cannot help thinking, would be the time for her to assert definitely and permanently her supremacy in Egypt ; this done, she need not trouble herself whether Russia has Constantinople or not. The cable telegram as published in our contemporary gives Sir Stafford Northcote the title of "lord." We have heard nothing of his elevation to the peerage, however, and it is impossible to believe that the Conservative party in the Commons has at the present conjucture denuded itself of its only capable debater.
