During the month of April 43 vessels arrived at this port, with a tonnage of 5654 tons ; 46 sailed, with a tonnage of G846 tons. The s.s. Jane Douglas arrived at the anchorage from Poverty Bay at midnight on Wednesday, and came inside at 7 a. m. on Friday. She left Poverty Bay at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, thus making a fair passage of eleven hours. Upon her \ip trip she met with a severe southerly gale, and was forced to seek shelter under Young Nick's Head for two hours. The s.s. Rangatira, Captain Evans, left for Poverty at 9.39 a.m. on Friday, and steamed out against a strong tide. She has on board her original cargo for Poverty Bay, shipped at Wellington. The Collector of Customs at this port, J. M. Tabuteau, Esq., was a passenger by her. The s.s. Go-Ahead is still on the bar at Poverty Bay. A number of men are busily engaged in trying to float her. She is said to be in a very nasty place. We trust, however, that their efforts to float her may prove successful. The schooner Spray left Lyttelton heads last Saturday, the 28th of April, with a light S.W. wind, which gradually freshened into a strong breeze. She passed Cape Palliser at 8 p.m. on Sunday, the 29th, with a strong southerly gale and heavy sea, and anchored off this port at 5 p.m. on Monday. On Tuesday a heavy sea got up, and she shifted to the westward and dropped anchor. At about 9 o'clock the same evening there was a very heavy sea, and her starboard anchor parted. A second anchor was let go, which held. She was engaged on Thursday morning in getting up the lost anchor, which she succeeded in doing, and she was towed in on Friday morning by the s.s. Result. The captain reports passing a brig and a schooner off the Kaikora peninsular — the brig at anchor and the schooner head-reaching. There was at the time a strong S. S. E. gale blowing, with a heavy sea. With reference to the missing schooner Edward, the following telegram was received by E. F. Rich, Esq., Deputy-Collector of Customs, from W. Seed, Esq., the Secretary and Inspector: — "Small schooner Edward left Lyttelton 7th April ; was blown off Banks' peninsular in heavy S. W. gale ; is still missing. The friends of the master think the vessel is still afloat, with loss of sails, somewhere between Capes Kidnappers and Palliser. Ask masters of all vessels bound from Napier in that direction to look out for her." The s.s. Rangatira, Captain Evans, arrived in this port from Poverty Bay at an early hour on Suuday morning. She arrived at poverty Bay from this port at 5 p.m. on Friday, but found a very heavy sea ; she, therefore, was unable to land any cargo and came on again at 2 p.m. on Saturday, arriving here as above. She left again at noon, same day, for Wellington. The Union s.s. Rotorua arrived in the roadstead from Wellington at 10 a.m., on Sunday. The following is a report of her passage : — Left Port Chalmers at 4 p. m. on the 3rd ; arrived at Lyttelton at 8.30 a.m. on the 4th and proceeded on to Wellington the same evening at 7 o'clock, arriving at 11 a.m. on the sth. She steamed for Napier at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday, and arrived as above. She left for Auckland and Sydney at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday. We are indebted to Mr Pringle, purser, for files and report. Among the passengers outwards by the Rotorua was Mr. C. H. Maclean, who has for some time held the jjost of accountant in the Bank of New Zealand, at Napier. He lias, we learn, received the same appointment in the Auckland branch. The schooner Albatross arrived from Whangapoua, on Sunday morning. She was towed in by the s.s. Sir Donald. She has a cargo of timber. The Evening Post of the 4th has the following : — " Steam was got up on board tlie p.s. Luna this morning, when she proceeded to Evans' Bay and had her compasses adjusted. Her engines worked very smoothly, and she steamed between eight and nine knots an hour. She leaves to-morrow afternoon for Westport and Greymouth, in command of Captain Bascand, late of tlie steamer Waipara. The hpineward run from Melbourne to the Downs of the St. Osyth occupied fifty-one days, including time coaling at Cape Verd ; steaming time, under forty -nine days. "This/ a correspondent of the Engineer remarks, "I need hardly say, is spendid work. What is most remarkable is the fact that the engines ran from Melbourne to Cape Verd without any stoppage whatever, and, hail it not been for the necessity of coaling and sweeping uptake, might have run home. The run to Cape Verd recorded over 40 days' uninterrupted steaming. Her consumption has been 32h tons per twenty-four hours on the outward passage, and 34 tons Australian Bulli coal home. — Evening Star.
