ROY'S HILL EMBANKMENT.
Sir,— l notice in the Telegraph of last evening a paragraph stating that a Taradale correspondent writing to that paper about the embankment at Roy's Hill says that " it is well known that the embankment was erected solely to protect the property of the large holders in the Here- " taunga district, although it was ostensibly erected to afford protection to the railway." This, Mr Editor, is sheer nonsense, as anyone acquainted with the locality must know. So far from the embankment protecting, or being intended to protect, the properties in question it has been the means of .flooding them, for before the embankment was put up the stream went quite beyond those properties, whereas it has now been brought on to their very borders, with encroachments upon the properties themselves in times of flood. — I am, &c, Hastings. May 5, 1877.
