THE SWAMP DOVECOT.

Sir, — One of the handsomest and most artistic structures in Napier is the great octagonal dovecot that stands at the edge of the swamp, and which cannot fail to strike the beholder with admiration at the skill displayed in the erection of this costly structure. Being a new chum, I must confess my astonishment when I was informed that the Acclimatisation Society had gone to the expense of erecting this costly bxiilding for the purpose of rearing carrier pigeons and domesticating "swamp hens." However, I was somewhat surprised when on further enquiry I was informed that the building was intended as the receptacle of the pumping machinery in connection with the waterworks. This information nearly took my breath away, and completely staggered me, totally upsetting my preconceived notions as to the usefulness and liberality of the Acclimatisation Society. Still, sir, I have my doubts as to the truthfulness of my last informant, and feel that he was only taking a rise out of me, seeing that I am a new chum. Therefore I should esteem it a great favor if you could enlighten me on the matter. Carrier pigeons and swamp hens I believe it is well adapted for, but pumping machinery — never. — I am, &c, New Chum. April 27, 1577.
