The Petane people, as we mentioned some time ago, petitioned the Government for a twice-weekly mail service. The reply they have received is, we understand, that they can have it if they p«Ty for it themselves. The charge has been frequently made against the Government that their economy really means nothing more than throwing the burden formerly borne by the public as a whole, on to the public scattered over the colony. Instead of imposing a land tax for instance, they make the counties impose it. The line of action that is being pursued with regard to the inland mail services, if Petane is a fair example, might certainly be (plot eel sustaining the above conclusion. As the settlement is within almost tive miles of Napier, it seems monstrous that it should be in a worse position in . regard to its mails than Porangahau.
