The s.s. Star of the South arrived from Wellington at S p.m. on Tuesday, having been twenty-four hours on the passage. She left again for Auckland almost directly after her arrival. The schooner Albatross took her departure for Whangapoua at an early hour yesterday morning. The cutter Fannie arrived in this port from Whangapoua early yesterday morning, after a long passage of seventeen days. She left Whangapoua at 8 a.m. on the Ist, with afairS.W. wind, and at about G p.m. the wind went round to the S. E. blowing strong, and a very heavy sea got up. She turned back and took shelter tinder Mercury Island, and lay there during the night. On the morning of the 3rd the wind moderated and went round to the W. ; anchor was weighed and sail set. The wind was very light, and she took two days coming from Mercury Bay to Alderman's Island. When off the latter place the wind blew hard from the IST. E., and she again sought shelter under Mercury Island, arriving there upon the evening of the same day. On Sunday the wind chopped round to the N.W. and blew a gale. On Monday the wind changed to the South, and moderated ; sail was once more set. From Mercury Bay to Portland Island she had light variable winds. She fell in with the Columbia, schooner, off Portland Island, and exchanged provisions. When at this side of Portland Island a strong westerly breeze sprang up. The s.s. Eangatira left Wellington for this port at noon yesterday, and may, therefore, be looked for at about 11 a.m. to-day. She leaves for Poverty Bay at i p.m. to-day. The barquentine Falcon was to have left for Newcastle yesterday, but unfortunately missed the tide. She will probably get away to-day. Oaptaiu Andrew, who was in command of the Taranaki when she recently went on to Shag Reef, has been suspended by the Union Company for three months, but receiving pay during that term at chief officer's rate.
