A fire occurred in Walker-street last night, "when the Rising Sun Hotel, together with Carter's store and Palmer's drapery shops, were completely destroyed. The stock and furniture of the hotel were insured in the Royal for £200, and the building in the Norwich for £300. The store was insured for £100 in the Norwich, and £100 in the New Zealand oilice. The third building was insured for £100 in the Norwich. Major Atkinson, the Premier, writes a letter to the New Zealand Times — apparently a copy of one written to the Agent-General — in reference to certain New Zealand statistics published in Westgarth's Circular of January, 1877. He first points out that the circular publishes the amount of New Zealand revenue for 1873-74 instead oi that for 1876. The tables in Westgarth's Circular made out that the revenue of New Zealand for 1875 was £1,077,020, while

that of Victoria was £4,236,423. The Premier, quoting from New Zealand statistics, shows that the receipts in New Zealand for 1875 amounted to £2,841,053 (instead of only £1,677,626), as compared with the £4,236,523 received in Victoria. He also points out that, although there was a note in the circular stating that the amount given as New Zealand revenue was ex provincial revenues, still that left- aj> tvvov of £30,000. He requested the Agent-Gene-, ral to make personal explanation to Mr Wcstgarrfi, and get him to rectify the error pointed out, and also inform him that he can obtain all statistics of the colony, and information relating to its progress, at the Agent-General's office. The Premier appends to the letter tabulated statement of all the sources of revenue of Victoria and New Zealand for 1875. The totals are — Victoria, £4,236,413 ; New Zealand, £2,841,953. The Government steamer Luna has been just sold (though not yet taken over) to the Brunner Coal Company for £4000. Directly the flag fell Guy made the running at a terrific pace, tintil entering the straight for the first time. On passing the stand Templeton had crawled up until he was only half a length behind. The two horses raced together until the second mile from home, when, Rowlands called upon Templeton, and he responded gamely, entering the straight half a length ahead of Guy. This order was maintained until the rails were reached, Avhen Guy made a desperate effort to get on even terms with Templeton twelve lengths from home, but the latter passed the post winner by a length and a half, amid tremendous cheering. KAITANGATA, April 6. An inquest was held to-day into the origin of the fire which destroyed the offices, store, and timber belonging to Reginald M'Donald, storekeeper and timber merchant, on the morning of the 4th hist. The jury returned a verdict that the place was maliciously set on fire, but that there was no evidence to show by whom. Besides the premises destroyed, a timber store and produce store had been set on fire by means of " Hobart Toavii splets" and a bag saturated with turpentine, but they were discovered and extinguished before any damage was done. Two detectives have been engaged investigating the matter for several days. The premises and stock were fully insured. CHRISTCHURCH, April 6. At the opening of the annual session of the Philosophical Institute, Dr. Haast, in his presidential address, gave an account of the discovery of remai'kable ancient rock paintings in the Weka Pass ranges. He exhibited careful drawings of them made by S. S. Cousins. Some of the rock paintings are 15 feet long. They represent animals of foreign countries, weapons and dresses of semi-civilised people ; underneath them are characters like those of the Tanil language, resembling those on an ancient bell found in the North Island. In the Supreme Court report telegraphed yesterday, it was wrongly stated that Jacobson, who was convicted of embezzlement, was formerly a clerk in the National Bank. It was in the Colonial Bank that he was formerly clerk. At the Supreme Court, Albert Carroll, an old oifender, was sentenced to four years' penal servitude for breaking and entering a dwelling. ' The Alburnia has declared a 2s Gd dividend. The District Inspector of Sheep attempted to stop the sale of sheep from Patea, which he pronounced scabby, although in landing the Inspector had passed them. The sale is proceeding, notwithstanding that a more vigorous inspection is likely to be instituted. At the Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday-, before Messrs F. F. Ormondand G. Burton, the following case was heard : — J. H. Smythe against W. Atwarcl, claim for £20 for purchasing and removing away from certain leasehold property (the site of the late fire) a brick chimney valued at £10, and- a colonial oven valued at £3 16s. There was also a claim for four shillings for trespass. The plaintiff proved his title to the ground, which is leased from W. Moloney. Evidence was brought to prove that Atward bought the chimney and oven from \V. Shaw, agent to the New Zealand Insurance Company, under their direction. Plaintiff having built in the stove after the chimney was erected, endeavored to prove that it was not a fixture, and having received his insurance on the stock, now sued for the sum of £20. The decision will be given at the next sitting of the Court.
