Rotorua, Captain Mewfai.'lane, .arrived in the.bay at 5.30 a.m. yes fcerday. She left Sydney for Auckland at 6 p.m. ou the 21st instant, and arrived in Auckland at 5 a.m. on the 28th,; haying experienced throughout the passage strong easterly winds and heavy sea. She steamed from Auckland at 5 p.m. on the 28th, and arrived in this port as above. From Auckland the weather was fine. ' - • • ■ . The barque Chaudiere, Captain Edward J. Pitfield got* away at an early hour yesterday morning. It is - rumoured that the ■ three-tniasted schooner Mary Wadley, that lately had to put into Nelson harbor in distress, has again come to grief between that port and Napier. We cannot vouch for the truth of this statement, as it is but a rumor. The ship Fernglen is now almost discharged. The next lighter will probably bring the fire engine designed for our local fire brigade. ' " : A sad event occurred at Oainara on Thnrsday fcnight,; March 15, by which Captain Duncan Bain, of the topsail schooner, Maid of .Otago, lost his life. The schooner is moored at a berth in shore of the breakwater, and Last night Captain Bain came up to town, and on his way back again, at about midnight, he lost Ids footing while walking down" the upper or old jetty, and was pro- ! cipitated to the rocks below, a depth of about 150 feet. He was fonnd quite dead, lying on his right side, at 0 o'clock this morning by, the men at the breakwater. The body was conveyed to the Northern Hotel, and an .inquest held this ofternoon. A verdict of accidental death was returned. Deceased leaves a wife and family in Dunedin.
