SOMEBODY'S DARLIKG. WATIMIJT tuok'd in little bed, A Somebody's darling lay ; x 1 Goldim curls around her head, Bo tired after play ! Little cheeks liie rose 3 rca, Sweet laughing eyes of blue, Smiling mouth— you might have saiu Bright angels round her flew. Tiny hands are crumpled tight Under her rosy cheeks, Mother softly shades the light That through the window streaks. Slowly treading up the aisle, Somebody's darling moves, With downcast eyes and happy smile, And near her all she lovos. Sun-rays stream through painted glass, A happy bride is she ; Around her stand her village class, Somebody's darling to see. Hnsh ! O hush ! tread softly now, Apgels are in the way, White and still as unbroken snow, Somebody's darling lay. Weep not, weep not so for her, To. her ca.n come no ill ; Surrounded by God's loving care, And — Somebody's darling still, , A START IN LIFE. A well-known Bendigo tradesman some few years ago,-thought he would like to hold 960 acres of land, land being a very grod investment. Tbe utmost he could sefl^ct is, as everybody knows, 320 acres. BjWever, lie thought he had got over thpt dimcnlty by getting an old and faithful employee to take up one block, and' an orphaned and affectionate niece, whom he, being her uncle, had tenderly reared, to select the other. So tbe three blocks were taken up, and -the 960 acres, quite a little station,, were his own for life, so he thought. The man dummy had a hut erected on his selection wherein he made a pretence of residence; so also had the young lady. Our wealthy tradesman .supplied all- the - cash, and spent £7po on the two dummy selections. In due course of time the male and female dummies applied for their " certificates of improvement," which certificates gave a freehold right to tbe land when obtained. The certificates were granted. To cut the story short, " the man. " and the niece, seeing they could do what they liked with the land, refused to give it up. In fact, they had fallen in love with each other, and. they are now both married, with a " square mile " of land to start life upon, and the niece under the protection of her husband, cares not a straw for her uncle, whom she defies. That unfortunate uncle has certainly been very kind; to. his relation in setting her up for life in such a fashion, though at the same time he never intended to do so. Twp colored men took refuge under a tree in a violent thunderstorm. " Julius, can you pray ?" said one. "No, Sam," was the reply, "nebber prayed in my life."-.. "Well, can't you sing a hymn ?" Just then the lightning struck a tree near by, shivering it, when the first speaker exclaimed, "See heah, honey, sumflin 'ligious has got to be done, an' dat mighty sudden, too; 'spose you pass round de hat!"
