SYDNEY, March 16. No change in commercial quotations, and business very dull. Archbishop Polding died to-day. He will be buried on Monday. The G-overnor has refused the dissolution of the Legislative Assembly, and the Government have resigned. Mr Par'kes is commissioned to form a new Ministry. MELBOURNE, March 16. At the cricket match to-day the combined Australian team went in first. Sis out for 196 ; Bannerman, not out, 126. Lateb. Seven wickets for 232 ; Bannerman, not out. 157. •
WELLINGTON, March 16. Mrs Scott Siddons made her first appearance last night. The house was crammed in all parts, it being the largest attendance ever seen since the Opera Company's performance. Romeo and Juliet had a fine reception, and there was. enthusiastic applause throughout. Recent private advices from Australia state that Adelaide will not export this year more than 70,000 tons of breadstuffs,' as against 20,000 tons last year ; and that Sydney will this year be a large importer of grain, in consequence of the severe droughts. The Times says that Captain Campbell Walker's term o£ engagement as Conservator of State Forests expires with, the termination of the present month. It says that nothing will be done in the way of organising a staff until his report has been laid before Parliament. Captain Campbell-Walker leaves the colony on a visit to Australia and Tasmania next month. Mr 'O'Shea reports produce prices as follows-.— Flour, old, €15 7s 6d to £15 10s ; new, to arrive, £15 ; oats, 2s 9d to 3s ; bran, lOd to Is ; wheat, chick, 2s 9d to 3a 6d ; hams, 9£d to lOd ; bacon, 8d ; cheese, 6|d to 7jd ; pollard, 8d ; potatoes, 80s per to^jf ailing ;. maize, 5s 3d, no sale. ' • CHRISTCHURCH, March 16. The ewe fair to-day was not successful; 1477 ewes were entered, but only a small; portion sold. Another lot of rams bought for Wairarapa. Loan and Mercantile — Buyers, 52s ; sellers, 535. New Moanatairi — Buyers, 97s 6d ;. sellers, £5. Union Beach, 42s 6d. The charge of breach of the Merchant Shipping Act against Captain Carey, caused a scene in the Court, to-day. Captain Carey was not present. Captain Lodder applied for an adjournment ; the charge was neglecting to pay George Frost, lately mate of the Star of the South, 15s 4d, balance wages' due. Mr Russell, solicitor for plaintiff, objected to Capt. Lodder appearing for defendant on the ground that non-professional mea had no right to appear. The Bench considered that the case should be adjourned. Captain Carey being at sea MV Russell protested. A scene ensued and the case wss adjourned. AUCKLAND, March 16. Mr Alfred Buckland reports : — Beef, 23s to 28s ; mutton, 2d to 2|d. Bank of New Zealand, £19 los to £20. National, £5 to £5 7s 6d. Colonial, 40s, paid-up ; 33s 6d buyers. South British, sellers 80s. New Zealand Insurance, sellers 92s dd. TIMARU, March 16. G-rain is pouring into the town, and the railway is quite inadequate to carry it. The stations are blocked up with grain, and large quantities are stacked in the open air. This year's exports will be very large. The market is very unsettled —Wheat, 3s 6d to 4s 9d; oats. Is 8d to 2s 3d.

At the adjourned meeting of the County Council held last night, it having been intimated that the Government subsidy will be allowed only on rates collected by the first of April, it was re- i solved that tbo collector, should start collecting at once. Dr Ormond refused the Council permission to open the new road to Nuhaka, assigning- no reason for the refusal. Mr Cable made a proposition to, take down the Awatere Bridge on said road, if not opened in fourteen days. The Mariaia with mail outside the bar; cannot land on account of the sea. No improvement in the bar.
