CABLE TELEGRAMS. LONDON, January 15. The envoys of the European Powers met in Conference again to-day, and resolved upon the time of final communication to the Porte. They reassemble on Thursday, and if it is then found that the Porte persists in rejecting the proposals of the Powers, the envoys will withdraw from Stamboul on Friday, and return to their respective countries. * SYDNEY, January 16. A cricket match of an eleven against an eleven of All England is being played. The latter went in first, and scored 271 runs, out of which Ullyett made 95, and Pooley and Selby over 30 each. The Englishmen are to leave on Wednesday for New Zealand. Later. The New South Wales eleven are all out for 82, of which Evans made 30.

' AUCKLAND, January 16. At the R.M. Court to-day, P. H. Lewisson and Samuel Wells, jewellers, were charged with being beneficially interested in a lottery, got up for the disposal of jewellery, and were each fined £1 and costs. The other charges against defendants were dismissed on payment of fees. — Albyn Roberts was placed in the dock, charged with deserting his wife at Timaru. Accused had been arrested on borard the Rotorua, when about to sail for Sydney, the arrest being made on the strength of a telegram to the police. Mr Rees defended, arid demanded the release of accused, on pain of action for false imprisonment against the police, who he said had no business to arrest merely on a telegram, unless in a case of felony. There was a great scene in Court. Mr Bars tow, the Resident Magistrate, said he had no power to remand accused to Timaru. Inspector Broham said, and maintained, that accused was properly arrested. Mr Rees told accused to walk out of Court. He did so, and was immediately pounced upon by three constables, and brought back. Mr Rees and Mr Broham had a regular set to, the former accusing the latter of gross ignorance of law, and threatened to bring his conduct before the Government, Mr Broham pooh-poohed these threats, and described them as idle and windy ; he had heard them often during the last ten days, and they were worse since Mr Rees had got into the House. Mr Barstow eventually ordered the release of the accused. CHRISTCHURCH, January 16. Wet weather has again set in, fears are now entertained that the crops will be seriously damaged. The cricketers were not able to practice to-day, the ground being so soft. This is considered to improve the chances of the Otago eleven. Half-holiday will be observed during the first two days of the match. The City Council have decided to take steps for acquiring possession of a piece of land, opposite the Bank of New Zealand, for the double purpose of widening Col-ombo-street, and erecting Corporation offices. Mr Morton, the owner of the land, intended erecting a large hotel and shops,' the foundations for which have already been laid. He strongly opposes the Coun. cil taking the land. Sparrows are committing sad havoc amongst the grain crop, one farmer asserting that 80 acres of- barley on his farm have been almost totally destroyed by them. The City Council have decided to asphalt all the footpaths in the city halfwidth, at a cost of £12,000, the owners of the property to contribute 20s per chain towards it. Twenty applications for renewal of cab licenses were refused on the ground of misconduct, principally in relation to brothels. Many cabmen were said to be practically in the service of prostitutes, and the Corporation determined to put a stop to this. The City Council have decided to apply to the G-overnment for an endowment of 2000 acres of land. GREYMOUTH, January 16. The Coal Pit Heath Company are 17ft. through the main seam. The coal is splendid, bright and hard.
