CHATHAM ISLANDS.
(FEOM A COEBESPOKDENT.) Octobeh 18. The last remnant of' the Maoris will finally quit this island for Taranaki about the close of the present year, and are disposing of their remaining sheep runs and stock. The Kariwa run, comprising about 25,000 acres, together with stock, bas been taken by Me&srs. Chudleigh and Paltison ; • this, in addition"to their Wharekauri run, constitute these gentlemen the most extensive proprietors on the island. About 100 slieep, the property of Morioris, at Matarakau, have been recently destroyed by dogs. Some have been found dead and half eaten, others have been driven over a precipice into the sea. Within the last few weeks nearly 200 bead of cattle, roaming wild at Cape Young, bave been bunted down and shot by tbe Maories solely for their skins, which fetch ss. each. James Langdale, shepherd to Thomas Ritchie, Esq., Kaingaroa, was sued by the Maories for the loss of 107 sheep, alleged to have been destroyed by a young dog belonging to him. Tbe case was adjudicated on by E. R. Cbudleigh, Esq., J.P The loss, however, of only 20 sheep coulc be fairly laid to the charge of Langdale't dog, and he was adjudicated to pay £l( with costs. We are informed that a new Residen Magistrate is about to succeed Captaii Thomas on this island. We regret to say that the blight has fo tbe first time made its appearance on th island, the cabbages and other vegetable being covered with them. Arrived, Nov. 10, from Dunedin, th steamer Wainui, chartered by Messrs. "W and 6. Turnbull and Co. Cleared, Nov. 14, the steamer Walnu consigned to Messrs. W. and G. Turnbul Dunedin, with wool and cattle.
