, , ; Monday, May* 23. A fire took place here, this morning, in a grocery shop in Willis street Occupied by Robert Duke. It originated from a candle being left burning in a bedroom, too near the roof. The stock and the lower portion of the building were insured; The Commercial Hotel, Wanganui, was also burnt last night. The steamer Wallaby, lying in the river, was with difficulty saved. The fire was caused by the explosion of a kerosene lamp. The stock, house, and furniture were insured in the New Zealand Co. for £500. A valuable alluvial gold discovery is reported in Wairau valley, Marlborough. The stuff yields by sluicing eight ounces to the load.
