Locke, Esq., R.M., has left for Taupo, ti> be present at a large native meeting; to be shortly held at Tupaehaiaru. : . The Drama. : — We again remind ' riur roaderh of the attractive bill of fan: provided by thu Garrick'Clnb for this i-ve *ing. Mb. J. E. Toll-gate Expenditure. — According to a return laid on the table of the Council, the expenditure under the Toll-gate Act 1867, during the period from Ist July 1869 to 30th April 1870, was as follows.: — Town roads, £300 Bs., 2d.' ; TarehaV bridge' to Puketapn, £513 18s. 9d. ; Road to Havelock, £208 9s. Bd. ; total, £1022 16s. 7d. The Hon. the Defence Minister may, in course of a day or two, be- 1 expected to arrive ' in Napier in the steamer Liwia. Considering the hon. gentleman's intimate connection with this district, and the unwearied efforts he has put forth to preserve it from destruction as well as to restore peace to the colony generally, we cannot help thinking that some public recognition of Mr. M'Lean's services on this his first visit to Napier in his ministerial capacity, should be almost a spontaneous act on the part of its inhabitants. Since Monday, the 16th inst., the line has ben working very badly. On Friday the 20) h it whs reported down south of Oamaru, and, at 3 p.m. same day, it went down between Timaru and Temuka. On Saturday, it was right as far south as Oamaru ; and, on Sunday, it was up in the afternoon as far as Dunedin, but working very badly. Yesterday it was again down south of Timaru. Owing to these interruptions, the news which arrived at the Bluff on Saturday did not reach Napier till 10 p.m. on Sunday, and numerous private messages have been seriously delayed.
