New Magistrate. — S. G. Brandon Esq., of Napier has been appointed a Justice of the Peace for the colony. Messrs. Stuart and Co. will sell, this day, at their stores, a large assortment of general merchandise. Mr. Edward Lyndon will hold his monthly cattle and produce sale, to-morrow, May 7, at the Shamrock sale yards. Meaner Bridge. — -Workmen have lately been employed in removing, by means of a winch, a number of snags that have accumulated against the buttresses of Meanee bridge. The English Mail via San Francisco was due in Auckland on the sth inst., and should reach Nelsou (whence the news will be telegraphed to the Herald and other subscribing newspapers) on or about tomorrow. The Suez Mail. — The letter portion of the mail via Suez reached Napier on Wednesday afternoon by overland route from Wellington ; the newspapers will doubtless be forwarded by the Lord Ashley, to leave Wellington this day. His Honor the Judge may be expected on Saturday by the Lord Ashley. Cattle for Thames Market. — We cannot go wrong in saying that Mr. Banks, of the Thames goldfields, must feel pleased with the encouragement he has met with from our settlers. We learn that, during his few days' visit, he has bought over 800 head of first-class fat cattle. One purchase, we have no hesitation in saying, is the largest ever made in our province in stock, viz., of 582 head from Mr. M'Hardy. To give some idea of the quality of these cattle, principally from thoroughbred stock, they are estimated to weigh from eight to ten cwfc., so that the Thames people may look forward to being supplied with an article superior to any that Auckland can produce. Mr. Banks has also purchased over 5000 sheep of very superior quality, which, we regret to state, almost drains our province of really fat sheep, until about shearing time. For the conveyance of Mr. Baiiks' stock, we hear that the Coomerang is specially engaged, and, from the results of her last trip from Napier, we anticipate that the risk from mortality will be little or nothing. Napier Hospital. — -We have been requested to insert the following testimonial, being a unanimous expression of esteem on the part of the patients in the Napier Hospital for Mr. Gray, the late master: — "Dear Sir, —-We, the undersigned inpatients of the Provincial Hospital (on the occasion of your leaving that institution), desire most heartily and sincerely to thank you for the unremitting kindness and at-, tention which you have always exercised towards us. Under various and very trying circumstances both yourself and amiable partner have evinced the greatest anxiety for our comfort and well-being ; and to your good and skilful management we owe the alleviation of much suffering inseparable from the sick bed. We wish you every success in your new sphere, and trust that those sterling qualities which have gained our respect and esteem, may secure to their possessor all prosperity and happiness."— We remain, dear Sir, yours, &c, — Thomas Collins, John England, Matthew Scott, Eruera Kehukehu, P. Riley, Hugh Kenny, R. l'ilcher, James Pierce, James Cooper, John Hook." Criminal. — Bank notes to the amount of £9,950 were stolen from a clerk of Messrs. Barnetfc, Hoare, Hanbury & Co., while he was on his rounds. The numbers are known, and tho notes are stopped at the Bank. The bank manager, M. Demetrio Pappa, has been brought before the Lord Mayor upon fresh charges of embezzlement, and improper conversion to his own use of the securities of the bank, He has been remanded.
