Bank Holiday. — To-morrow (Saturday) being St. George's day, will be observed as a holiday by the Banks. Fine Weather — delightfully fine, indeed—has prevailed since our last; but a falling barometer gives warning of another change ere long. There is no disguising the foot that winter is close upon us. The English Mail due in Melbourne on the 14th inst., and at Holcitika yesterday, had not arrived up to the closing of the telegraph office last evening at 8 o'clock. - . Pkogress of the Telegraph.— r The northern telegraph line has been pushed as far as ltunanga, to which place the office now at Tarawera will be moved by Sunday. It is supposed that it will be afc Opepe in six weeks at the outside. Poverty Bay Militia. — The following appointments are gazetted : — -James Woodbine Johnson to be Lieutenant, date of commission, 16th February, 1870 ; James Benjamin Toynter to be Ensign, date of commission, 16th February, 1870. Tme English Mail will not, it appears, be forwarded to-day by the Airedale, but to-morrow by the Wellington — the latter being the subsidized boat. It is hoped, as the mail steamer does not leave Auckland till the 4th prox., that some other opportunity from Napier will yot present itself. Napier Brass Band. — A meeting of the subscribers to tre Napier Brass Band is convened for this evening. We hear that some disorganization has crept into this body, and that an effort is about to be made to re-establish it on a more sollid foundation. Napier Rifle Volunteers. — The following appointments are gazetted :—William llobert Robinson to be Captain, date of commission, 19th January, 1870; John James Torre to be Lieutenant, .date of commission, 19th Jauuary, -1870 ; John Close to be Ensign, date of commission, 19 th January, 1870. Goyeiinment Land Sale. — Yesterday, the Maungahararu run was put up to lease by the Government; it only realised the upset rental of £16 3s. Afc the same .time the light-house reserve was put up in two lots. No. 1 was taken at the upset price of £5 5s No. 2, put up at£o, was knocked down at £7 ss.
