THE WAITOTARA NATIVES.

The Wauganui Herald says : — The fear of the settlers thafc the natives would be allowed ,to return to their settlements on the Waitotara have not been' unfounded, as will be seen from the order printed below. The words "loyal natives," have been inserted cunningly, with: the object of throwing dust in the eyes of people in other parts of ,the Colony, but they do not deceive the. settlers of* the Patea and Waitotara districts. The order is directly opposed to the commands of Mr. Fox, who actually ordered a native to be turned off the Pakaraka block, and gave a general order that;no natives were to be allowed to settle. between the Okehu and Waingongora river. The commander of the district is not the commander of the settlers, who must see that the conditions of their return to their farms are faithfully observed. The following is the order issued : —

" The order of the Sth March, 1870, part; five, relative to natives travelling through the district being obliged to be provided with a pass, is hereby rescinded. Phe district is now open to all travellers, natives as well as settlers ; the condition imposed, and which officers commanding outposts will see is observed, is that.natives are not to carry arms. o_Bet-r.s in charge of posts are not to interfere with any loyal natives who may desire fco return to their kaingas, such as Pakaraka and other.reserves. . .. ....,„. (Signed) . . "M. -Soake, "Major Commanding. « 21st March, 1870." . „-, , r
