Nelsonj March 21. News from Auckland has been received to-day, confirming the news of Te Kooti's attack onppiepe; Marsh's son was killed ; the Hau Haus also tomahawked Awa Awa and two Europeans, They .were victorious, and the Europeans (3,0) and Arawas (40) Vetreated to Opo■One old man, who was taken prisoner, was released in order to get rum] his wife and child teirig meantime held as hostages. He returned with the rum,' and found that his wife and child 1 had been tomahawked; the Hau Haus also tomahawked him. One boy who escaped reports that the prisoners were all in danger, of being massacred. •Thia correspondent of the Southern Cross says 'that' 30 Maoris— men, women, and children— were butchered. The official account by : Mry M'Leah denies this. Native letters say that the number of Hau Haus under Te Kooti is 70. The settlers at Opotiki are under arms. Kooti has returned to Porere, and says he intends marching ; along the coast; aud attacking all settlements on the way. Latest, report say; that Kemp has accepted, the submission of a number of Hau Haus in the Uriwera country ; also that the party who surrendered will co-operate in the capture of Te Kooti.
