Volunteer Inspection. — Lieut-Colo-nel Harrington, the Inspector of Volunteers, is expected to arrive in Napier today, by the s.s. Wellington. In the afternoon he will hold the annual inspection of volunteers. The various volunteer corps, as will be seen, have been summoned for that purpose. A Fall of Rain on Saturday night last proved very refreshing to the parched ground. It was by no means, however, sufficient, after the .drought and high winds which have so long prevailed, and more is anxiously looked for. , Concert.-— Ths Napier Musical Society gives their first performance on Thursday next. Judging from the programme, which appears in another column, and seems to be composed of music of a lighter character than usual, we anticipate for our readers and .ourselves an enjoyable evening.; and we trust that the first effort of the new Society will be duly appreciated by the subscribers, and public generally. We ob-, serve one or two selections, which, if prtf r . ;i perly done, cannot fail to be pleasing ; and * the songs are new and attractive. We are glad to notice that there is more of the in- . strumental element than usual in the programme ; and we learn that the band includes almost all the old performers, and several new ones. " Figaro," which we do not remember having heard before, in this hemisphere, will be a treat to musicians ; and we hope that the ambition of the orchestra in attempting it will be justified by its performance. We warn performers to do their best, for there will be a " chiel araang ye taking notes, and faith he'll prent 'em." Cotswold Sheep. — A second lot of Cotswold sheep, 600 ia number, arrived by the Rangatira on Friday night, consigned to Messrs. D. and W. Hunter, Porangahau. Auction Sale op Drapery. — -Mr. Duncan announces an auction sale of drapery, to be held at Wellington to-morrow. Catalogues will arrive to-day, and bidding from a distance may be carried on by telegram. Napier Juvenile Talent. — We were much gratified on seeing in the Cornish Telegraph of December 22, that Master W. Colenso, late of Napier, and who, as may be supposed, enters into competition with English students under many disadvantages, has been honorably placed at the half-yearly examination of the institution where he pursues bis studies — Wadham house, Liskeard, and which is attended by about 80 bojs. The newspaper paragraph we quote is headed " Good boy's Chronicle," and is as follows: — " On Thursday, the 16tb, the half-yearly prizes, and also the writing and monthly, prizes, were presented.
