WELLINGTON.

Gymnasium. — At last, through fche exertions of several of our young men, we are to have a Gymnasium in this city. A building, centrally situated, and suited for the purpose, has beeu rented, and it will be fitted up with ropes, rings, single and doublo trapeze, horizontal bars, and other necessaries, and there will also bo a good supply of singlesticks, foils, dumbbells, &c. Between thirty and forty names are already on the member list, and it is expected thafc fche Gymnasium will be in " full swing" in a fortnight. Any person wishing to join will very shortly have an opportunity of so doing. — Independent, Feb. 17. The Never Despair Claim. — Some very promising specimens of stono from the Terawiti claim have been exhibited in town during tlio last day or bwo. AU of j them contain gold, which is distinctly visiblo with fche aid of an ordinary magnifying glass. Yesterday, several gentlemen visited the claim and returned laden with promising looking specimens. We understand that Dr. Hector also visited the clai m yesterday. — Ibid. Fit right on Flax. — We are exceedingly glad to learn that the agent for the Melita has resolved to ufl'er flax producers an opportunity of shipping their flax at a rea- j sonable rato of freight. Well dressed flax, the conditions of which meets with the . approval of the ship's surveyors, will be received at ,C 5 per ton of 20cwt, with 5 per cenfc primage. — Ibid. j Excursion Trip. — Mr. Martin has advertised the PhcßUo to make au excursion : trip to Nelson, leaving Wellington next Tuesday, and returning on Thursday, the faro 20s. Excursionists will thns havo ono clear day to remain in Nelson, the pleasantest place in all New Zealand to visit, and judging from the success of the previous excursions, and the cheap rate of passage, it is likely that a large number will avail themselves of the opportunity. — Evening Post, F.ib. 17. ExtraobdinjUiy Mistake. — Yesterday morning, (says the Post of tho 16th) by some means or other, the police became possessed of the intelligence that John liaudiey, the man injured by a case falling on his head on board the Lord Ashley tbe previous day, had died at the Hospital. They afc once took stops for holding an inquest, and iv tlio afternoon the Coroner and a jury, accompanied by the guardians ofthe law, proceeded to the Hospital, and after the usual preliminary steps went to view the body. The body, however, was found seated up in bed alive and quite comfortable, and apparently rather surprised at the advent of such a number of visitors. On the object of the visit being explained, Hundley said he was obliged for their prompt attention, but had no intention whatever to die afc present. Tho Coroner and all his baud of rude disciples took their departure rather chopfailen. The Adoevlisey of Ihe 17th is indignant afc [ tlie Post thus treating as an amusin/j. joke ! the gross blunder by which a number of our fellow-citizens wero takon away from thoir ordinary avocations to sit in inquest on the corpse of a man who proved to bo alive. Government Assuranoi. and Annuities. — A General Government Gazette issued on the 14th instant contains an Order in Council approving of a code of rules drawn up under the Government Annuities Act of last session. The regulations contain all necessary information for persons desiring either to insure their lives or purchase mi annuity. Wo (Independent) presume that business in this , line « ill be afc onco commenced. Tho various Money Order Offices throughout tho Colony are to be the places of business.
