The schooner Hero. Merwin, loft Wairoa at i p.m. on the 28th ulfc., and arrived at Nuhaka at 10 a.m. next day ; owing to it blowing hard from the westward could not land cargo ; left for Waikokopu at 5 o'clock ; but the wind veering round to the southward had to haul up for Long Poiut, and camo to anchor there at 9 o'clock ; took in part of cargo, and left last Suuday morning at two; from thence experienced light variable winds, and arrived on Monday moroing, and entered the Iron Pot at 7 p.m. same day. The clipper schooner Success, Fletcher, left Napier for Porangahau on the 24th January,

i with the wind from tbe N.W,, which she carried to Cape Kidnappers. It then fell away to a calm. At 11 a.m. next day got the lireeze from the N.E., and carried it all day and night, and arrived off Porangahau on the following morning at four ; it came on to blow hard from off the land, so could not make the Bay, and stood away for Maungakuri, off which waa becalmed. On Wednesday got a light breeze in the afternoon, and made for the anchorage, arriving there at 5 p.m. same day. Next morning landed cargo, and took off 19 bales of wool ; but, owing to the weather being calm, could not leave. A breeze springing up in the evening, left for Porangabau, and arrived there at five on Friday afternoon. It came on to blow that night from the W. and S.W. Landed Btores on the Monday, but, owing to the surf, could not bring off any wool. On Tuesday morning shipped 82 bales, the wind light from the B.E. ; at 7 p.m. wind freshened from the S.E., got the vessel under weigh and stood for Napier. Shortly after, the wind increased to a gale with thick weather; kept the vessel under small sail, reefed foresail and jib. Brought up in the roadstead at 8 a.m. last Wednesday, entered the Iron Pot same afternoon at i o'clock. Reports sighting the Star of the South whilst becalmed off Bare Island. She will leave to-day, weather permitting, for Blackhead. Owing to prevalent N.B. weather, the Success, Hero, and Three Brothers, schooners are detained in harbor ; but, the first favorable opportunity they will proceed to their several destinations. The R. T. Turnbull baa completed the lading in her hold. She is now stowing in the bouse, which will not take very long, and the end of the week may see her away. The fine ship Chile is taking her wool on board remarkably fast ; the stevedore is a Bmart fiand, having stowed her cargo last year. It is mtend«KM aL Btow her flax amidships, just under the main Hatch, so that in case it catches fire she can bd o » her engine to play directly upon it. This ufa^wif*, -p«,... caution, and one worthy to be imitated, even if no great danger is to be apprehended. This vessel is well adapted for carrying passengers. She has good accommodation, plenty of ventilation, and is a good strongship. The favorite cattle-trading steamer Star of the South, Captain Bendall, may now be looked for. She will be despatched again for Auckland shortly after arrival.
