MILITIA AND VOLUNTEER L-ESU TRIOT OLIDBRS. (Extract from the " New Zealand Gazette," No. 72, of the 80th December, 1869.) Colonial Defence Office, "Wellington, 22nd December. 1869. THE following Rules and Kegulations for the Competition for the General Government Prizes, 1870, are published for general information. W. GISBORNE (in the absence of Mr. M'Lean.) COLONIAL PRIZES. 1. The firing for the Colonial Prizes will take place ab Dunedin, on a day to be hereafter named by the Government. 2. Competitors for the Colonial Prizes will fire for the Ist Set op Phizes. At ranges of 300, 400, 500 yards. Five (5) shots ab each range. Maximum points, 60. No prize will be given for a less score than 40 points. Position at 300 yards, kneeling. 2nd Set of Prizes. At -ranges of 400, 500, 600 yards. Seven (7) shots at each range. Maximum points, 84. No prize will be given for a less score than 56 points. 3rd Set oj? Prizes —Judging Distance Prizes. At such distances, not exceeding 600 yards, as may be appointed by the officer in command of the firing party. Five (5) shots in the whole to be fired by each competitor, who will judge his own distance. Maximum points, 20. No prize will be given for a less score than 13 points. 4th Set op Prizes— Running Prizes. At a range of 200 yards. (l.). Time — five minutes, to commence .^first shot. (2.) Competitor's to come loaded, hut not capped, to the filing point. (3.) At the word "Commence," to cap and fire. (4.) After every two shots, the competitor to cany his rifle, ammunition, rod, and everything he makes use of in firing, reund a post fifty (50) yards off, loading when he likes, hut not capping, until he arrives at the firing point. (5 .) No assistance whatever permitted . sth Set of Prizes — For Rapidity. At ranges of 200 and 300 yards. Time, three minutes at each range, to commence at first shot, as in the 4th Set. No assistance whatever permitted. 6th Set ov Prizes — Consolation Prizes. At ranges of 200 and 300 yards. Five (5) shots at each range. Maximum points, 40. No prize will be given for a less score than 27 points. Range, 200 yards— position, standing. Range, 300 yards — position, kneeling. To be fired for by those competitors only who have not succeeded in winning any prize in the previous five sets. Rules for Choice of District Representatives to Compete tor the Colonial Prizes. 4. Officers and men of the Armed Constabulary, Militia called out for actual service .or for training and exercise, and of the Volunteer Force, are eligible to become competitors for the Colonial Prizes, subject to the following Rules : — ! (1.) Division of the Armed Coni stabulary, each Company of Milii tia called out for actual service or ;j training and exercise, and each Volunteer Corps shall, by such .1 preliminary firing as the Officer :| Commanding the Division, Com- ■ j pany, or Corps may appoint, select || one representative for every fif|j teen men or fraction of fifteen i ] over ten men, to take part in the i competitive firing provided for in sub-rule (3). , (2.) The names of the Representatives thus selected, together with the Roll of the Division, Company, : or Corps to which they belong, are to be sent to the Officer Commanding the District before the 28th February, 1870. (3.) These Representatives will meet at such time and place as the Officer Commanding the District may appoint, to compete for the choice of District Representatives, under the following conditions : — (a.) Five shots at each range of 400, 500, 600 yards. A trial shot allowed at each range. (6.) The highest scorers to be District Representatives. No District to send more than three Representatives. No competitor is eligible to be a Representative who does not score 40 marks. 5. The cost of a saloon cabin passage to ,and from the place appointed (calculated at t.he rates charged for return tickets) will be allowed to the competitors, together with a sum of ten shillings a day to each non-resi-dent during his unavoidable detention while attending the competition.
